Harvestfield starts local production of Synera DuoForte malaria nets in Nigeria

The Ogun State facility is wholly Nigerian-owned and produces dual active ingredient long-lasting insecticidal nets combining a pyrethroid with chlorfenapyr.

NIGERIA—Harvestfield Healthcare FZE has started commercial production of Synera DuoForte insecticide-treated nets in Nigeria to expand local manufacturing of malaria prevention products.

Operations began on 13 September 2026 at the company’s manufacturing facility in the Harvestfield Free Trade Zone, with production already supporting a World Bank-funded programme serving 31 states.

Expanding local net manufacturing

The Ogun State facility is wholly Nigerian-owned and produces dual active ingredient long-lasting insecticidal nets combining a pyrethroid with chlorfenapyr.

Harvestfield manufactures Synera DuoForte under an agreement with GDM Health Products, which developed and owns the product.

The development follows Vestergaard Sàrl’s announcement that Health Textiles Nigeria FZE had also become operational and would manufacture PermaNet Dual, a dual-active-ingredient net developed to address insecticide resistance.

Unlike conventional nets that rely mainly on pyrethroids, dual-active-ingredient nets combine two insecticides with different modes of action.

This approach is increasingly relevant in Nigeria, where mosquito populations have developed pyrethroid resistance in several areas.

Although conventional nets continue to provide a physical barrier against mosquitoes, insecticide resistance can reduce their killing effect.

The World Health Organization recommends dual active ingredient nets in settings where pyrethroid resistance has been established.

Quality and regulatory requirements

Synera DuoForte is prequalified by the World Health Organization, with GDM Health Products holding the product’s prequalification.

Harvestfield’s Ogun State facility is listed as an approved manufacturing site under the prequalification and is also certified by Nigeria’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control and under ISO standards.

Jon Bastow, a representative of GDM Health Products, said the partnership with Harvestfield would support production of Synera DuoForte in Nigeria and the prequalification of the Ogun State facility.

Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare Professor Muhammad Ali Pate said local production of health products was central to Nigeria’s health security.

He noted that a Nigerian facility producing next-generation insecticide-treated nets to international standards and supplying programmes across 31 states supports the government’s Renewed Hope agenda.

Strengthening the domestic supply chain

Harvestfield’s manufacturing expansion builds on 26 years of experience in Nigeria’s vector control sector.

The group has distributed more than 42 million insecticide-treated nets across all 36 states and has served as an exclusive national distribution partner for WHO prequalified nets since 2018.

Local production can shorten supply chains and reduce reliance on overseas manufacturing schedules, including the 45 to 60 day ocean transit associated with imported nets.

It also creates domestic technical, quality assurance and regulatory capabilities that could support wider healthcare manufacturing.

Dr Abdul Mukhtar of the Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain said the initiative aims to shift Nigeria from importing health products towards domestic production.

He added that manufacturing facilities must meet internationally accepted standards and have the capacity to supply at national scale.

The investment forms part of federal efforts to strengthen domestic manufacturing of health products under the Renewed Hope agenda for health, the Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain, and the Nigeria First procurement policy.
