Kenya Medical Association appoints Dr Wendy Kimbui as new CEO
As Chief Executive Officer, Dr Kimbui will lead the Association’s operations as it continues to represent doctors and engage on healthcare issues in Kenya.
KENYA—The Kenya Medical Association (KMA) has appointed Dr Wendy Kimbui as its new Chief Executive Officer, bringing more than a decade of experience in health systems leadership across the humanitarian, private, and public sectors.
Dr Kimbui most recently served as National Migration Health Physician and Acting Head of Sub Office for the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Kakuma.
In this role, she was involved in health services and programmes serving migrant and refugee communities.
Before joining IOM, she worked at The Nairobi Hospital, where she led the Accident and Emergency and Outpatient departments.
Her experience spans clinical practice, health programme management and institutional leadership.
She has also worked across different areas of healthcare, giving her experience in both service delivery and health systems management.
Governance and professional leadership
Dr Kimbui also brings experience in health sector governance and professional leadership.
She served on the Ministry of Health’s Independent Investigative Committee on Tissue and Organ Transplant Services, which examined issues surrounding the country’s transplant services.
She was also a member of the National Advisory Committee of the Health Workforce Governance Project at Strathmore University Business School.
The project focused on strengthening approaches to health workforce governance and management.
In addition, Dr Kimbui served for five years on the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) National Advisory Council and previously held the position of Nairobi Branch Treasurer.
These roles have given her experience in professional representation, policy discussions and organisational governance.
Her professional involvement with KMA has continued through her membership of the Association’s Policy, Advocacy and Communication Committee.
Academic and professional qualifications
Dr Kimbui holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from the University of Nairobi and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Healthcare Management from Strathmore Business School.
She has also undertaken postgraduate training in project management, strategic consulting, and health law, policy and practice.
She is licensed to practise medicine by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
Her combination of medical training, healthcare management education and experience across public, private and humanitarian settings forms the background to her new role at KMA.

As Chief Executive Officer, Dr Kimbui will lead the Association’s operations as it continues to represent doctors and engage on healthcare issues in Kenya.
KMA said it welcomed Dr Kimbui to the position and looked forward to working with her as she advances the Association’s mission to support doctors’ welfare and advocate for quality healthcare services across the country.
Her appointment adds another senior health professional with experience in clinical care, health systems, governance, and professional representation to the leadership of the national medical association.
