KUTRRH completes 10 kidney transplants in landmark healthcare partnership with MTRH
The partnership between KUTRRH and MTRH is expected to continue supporting the development of specialised renal services in Kenya.
KENYA—Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) have completed 10 kidney transplant pairs since launching their collaboration in June 2025.
The hospitals celebrated the achievement during the KUTRRH MTRH Kidney Transplant Team Appreciation Dinner held on 3 September 2026, marking a significant milestone for Kenya’s specialised healthcare services..
Acting KUTRRH Chief Executive Officer Dr. Anthony Kamau represented KUTRRH CEO Dr. Zeinab Gura NDC K at the event.
The 10 completed transplant pairs have given patients with advanced kidney disease renewed opportunities for healthier lives while offering their families new hope.
The achievement also highlights the expertise and commitment of healthcare professionals involved in delivering complex transplant procedures.
Strengthening specialised kidney care
Kidney transplantation requires close coordination among multiple medical disciplines, as well as reliable infrastructure, specialised equipment and well-trained personnel.
Through their partnership, KUTRRH and MTRH have combined expertise and resources to strengthen transplant service delivery.
The collaboration has also created opportunities for knowledge sharing, mentorship, skills transfer and continuous professional learning.
These efforts are helping to build local capacity for complex procedures and improve access to specialised renal care in Kenya.
KUTRRH said it remains committed to expanding kidney transplantation services while investing in the skills, systems and infrastructure needed to provide safe, accessible and patient centred care.
The hospital also aims to establish a Centre of Excellence for comprehensive renal care.
The planned centre would support patients across the kidney disease care pathway, from managing advanced kidney disease to transplantation and long-term post-transplant care.
Recognising the teams behind the milestone
The two hospitals have credited the success to the multidisciplinary teams that support kidney transplantation at every stage.
These include surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory specialists, radiologists, nutritionists, counsellors, critical care teams and administrators.
Each team contributes to patient assessment, preparation, surgery, recovery and follow-up.
Their coordinated work is essential to maintaining patient safety and ensuring continuity of care throughout the transplant process.
The hospitals also recognised the patients who placed their trust in the transplant teams and the donors whose generosity made the procedures possible.
Kidney donors play a critical role in transplantation by giving patients an opportunity to receive a functioning kidney and improve their quality of life.
The partnership between KUTRRH and MTRH is expected to continue supporting the development of specialised renal services in Kenya.
Both institutions plan to strengthen their collaboration, expand clinical capacity, support research and encourage innovation in kidney care.
