OrbiMed raises US$3B across two funds to back global life sciences companies

The firm secured capital from a broad investor base, including medical institutions, pension funds, family offices, sovereign wealth funds and university endowments.

USA—Healthcare investment firm OrbiMed has raised US$3 billion across two private equity funds to finance life sciences companies in the United States, Europe, and Asia, targeting opportunities in biopharmaceuticals, medical technology and healthcare services.

The fundraising includes US$1.9 billion for OrbiMed Private Investments X, which will invest in US and European life sciences companies, and more than US$1 billion for OrbiMed Asia Partners VI, which will support venture capital and healthcare growth opportunities throughout Asia.

Biopharmaceuticals remain a key investment focus

The new funds follow the launch of their predecessors three years ago.

Although OrbiMed will consider opportunities across the life sciences sector, it will focus primarily on biopharmaceuticals, technology-enabled healthcare services, medical devices, and diagnostics.

The firm secured capital from a broad investor base, including medical institutions, pension funds, family offices, sovereign wealth funds, and university endowments.

This mix of institutional and private investors will support investments across companies at different stages of development and growth.

According to OrbiMed managing partner Carl Gordon, advances in artificial intelligence (AI), emerging therapeutic technologies, and China’s expanding biotechnology industry are creating new investment opportunities.

“AI, a proliferation of new therapeutic modalities and China’s emergence as a biotechnology powerhouse are expanding the opportunities to develop transformative treatments,” Gordon said.

He added that OrbiMed looks forward to working with entrepreneurs to translate these advances into established healthcare businesses.

Healthcare investment activity shows regional differences

OrbiMed’s fundraising comes amid continued investment in biotechnology and healthcare innovation.

In August 2026, fellow healthcare investor ARCH Venture Partners outlined plans to raise US$ 3 billion to support early-stage biotechnology companies.

Earlier in October, European life sciences venture capital firm Forbion raised €2.3 billion (US$2.6 billion) across two funds to invest in about 30 biotechnology companies with growth potential.

However, the broader investment market has shown mixed performance.

A recent GlobalData report found that both the value and volume of global venture capital deals declined quarter-on-quarter in the third quarter of 2026 compared with the second quarter.

The Asia-Pacific region diverged from this trend, recording a 20.7% quarterly increase in deal value, driven by China.

The region’s performance highlights the growing importance of Asian biotechnology markets to investors seeking opportunities in drug development and healthcare innovation.
