PODTECH completes modular bio-pharma manufacturing facility for Bioventure Healthcare in UAE

The facility includes ISO Class 8 cleanrooms, a secondary packaging area, quality control laboratories and a microbiology laboratory equipped for sterility testing.

UAE—PODTECH™ has completed a prefabricated modular pharmaceutical manufacturing facility for Bioventure Healthcare, a subsidiary of Mubadala Bio, to expand local production of hormone medicines in the United Arab Emirates.

The 250-square-meter facility comprises 14 PODULE™ units designed for manufacturing oral solid dosage (OSD) hormone medicines.

Its modular design allows key construction and testing activities to take place off-site, potentially reducing installation time and disruption to existing operations.

Facility design and manufacturing capabilities

The facility includes ISO Class 8 cleanrooms, a secondary packaging area, quality control laboratories and a microbiology laboratory equipped for sterility testing.

A micro-isolator contains OSD manufacturing, while a dedicated sterility isolator supports microbiological testing.

PODTECH designed and installed the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system, alongside continuous pressure monitoring, control and alarm systems.

Pass boxes and air showers help control the movement of materials and personnel into controlled manufacturing areas, supporting contamination prevention and cleanroom operations.

Off-site construction and validation

PODTECH manufactured the modular units at its UAE factory and conducted factory acceptance testing (FAT) before shipping them to the installation site.

Following delivery, the units were connected using a plug-and-play approach and underwent site acceptance testing.

The company’s scope covered design, engineering, mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) systems, HVAC installation and validation.

However, the project announcement did not specify the total delivery time or provide a detailed comparison with conventional construction.

PODTECH says its prefabricated approach can reduce project schedules by up to 50% compared with traditional pharmaceutical factory construction.

The model shifts much of the building work and equipment testing away from the operating site, potentially shortening installation periods and limiting disruption during facility expansion.

UAE pharmaceutical manufacturing expansion

The project supports Mubadala Bio’s efforts to expand domestic manufacturing of hormone and high-potency medicines.

Increasing local production capacity is part of the UAE’s broader strategy to strengthen pharmaceutical supply security and reduce dependence on imported medicines.

Modular facilities offer pharmaceutical manufacturers an alternative to conventional construction, particularly when projects require controlled environments, specialised ventilation and containment systems, and rigorous quality testing.

Standardised off-site production can also allow some construction and engineering activities to proceed alongside site preparation.

For the UAE’s pharmaceutical sector, the approach could help manufacturers add specialised production capacity while managing construction timelines and operational demands.

Its suitability for individual projects will depend on manufacturing requirements, regulatory validation, facility design and the products being produced.
