Russia’s AI medical platform analyzes 10M images, expands to 74 regions nationwide

More than 2,000 regional medical organizations have connected to the system, creating a vast network of AI-supported healthcare facilities.

RUSSIA—Moscow’s artificial intelligence platform, MosMedAI, has reached a significant milestone by supporting physicians throughout Russia in analyzing over 10 million medical images.

Anastasia Rakova, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Social Development, announced this achievement as the platform continues its nationwide expansion.

President Vladimir Putin directed the development of this advanced medical AI system, which Moscow has now scaled to serve regional healthcare facilities across the country.

The platform began offering its AI services to regional healthcare systems in 2024, marking a major step in Russia’s healthcare digitization efforts.

Rapid national adoption

The initiative has gained remarkable traction among Russia’s regions.

Currently, 74 regions have joined the program, demonstrating widespread acceptance of AI-assisted medical diagnosis.

The Republic of Buryatia participates in a pilot phase, helping to refine the platform’s capabilities before broader implementation.

More than 2,000 regional medical organizations have connected to the system, creating a vast network of AI-supported healthcare facilities.

Building on five years of expertise

Rakova highlighted Moscow’s pioneering role in medical AI development.

“Over the past five years, Moscow has accumulated unique expertise in artificial intelligence in healthcare. We were the first in the world to launch an experiment integrating computer vision into radiology,” she explained.

This leadership position stems from extensive testing and development involving more than 200 algorithms that have participated in the Moscow project.

This comprehensive testing phase has led to the creation of new diagnostic methodologies that improve patient care.

Current capabilities and quality standards

The platform currently provides regional healthcare facilities with AI services for analyzing several critical types of medical images.

These include mammograms for breast cancer screening, chest X-rays for respiratory conditions, brain CT scans for neurological assessments, and chest CT scans for detailed lung examinations.

Authorities have registered all algorithms as official medical devices, ensuring they meet regulatory standards.

The platform maintains continuous quality monitoring to guarantee accuracy and reliability in clinical settings.

Supporting, not replacing, medical professionals

Rakova emphasized the platform’s role as a supportive tool rather than a replacement for human expertise.

“Artificial intelligence does not replace doctors, but rather serves as their highly accurate assistant,” she clarified.

The technology helps physicians reduce the risk of overlooking pathologies that might escape human detection during routine screenings.

This assistance proves particularly valuable in high-volume diagnostic settings where fatigue can affect accuracy.

Moscow has tested 60 different AI services, making them available for use within the city’s healthcare system.

Of these, 17 services have proven sufficiently reliable for deployment across the country, serving medical organizations in participating regions.

Processing volume surpasses Moscow’s own needs

The platform’s reach has grown substantially, with regional facilities now generating more imaging studies than Moscow itself.

Regional medical organizations currently submit approximately one million images per month for AI analysis, exceeding Moscow’s own monthly volume.

This shift demonstrates how provincial healthcare systems increasingly rely on the capital’s technological infrastructure.

Development and maintenance

The Moscow Department of Healthcare’s Center for Diagnostics and Telemedicine collaborates with the Moscow Department of Information Technology to develop and maintain the MosMedAI platform.

This partnership combines medical expertise with technical capabilities, ensuring the system meets both clinical needs and technological standards.

The ongoing collaboration allows for continuous improvements based on feedback from physicians using the platform across Russia’s diverse healthcare landscape.
