The Department of Health has begun distributing the injectable through an initial network of 360 health facilities located in high-burden districts.
The launch brings together national and international health stakeholders who are supporting Nigeria’s broader HIV response strategy.
The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority officially approved Lenacapavir, branded as Sunlenca, on October 27, 2025, making South Africa the first African country to authorize this innovation.
Lenacapavir complements existing prevention methods such as oral pre-exposure prophylaxis and long-acting injectable cabotegravir.
The initial rollout will target 152 health facilities across 15 high-burden counties, following a carefully structured, phased approach.
The introduction of lenacapavir will expand rather than replace current prevention methods available in Rwanda.
