Takeda to invest US$30M in Indonesia’s first biolife plasma network

The approval authorises the company to collect plasma in Indonesia and process it through its global manufacturing network while the country develops its own plasma infrastructure.

 

INDONESIA—Takeda has partnered with the Indonesian government on a multi-phase initiative aimed at strengthening the country’s plasma ecosystem and improving access to plasma-derived medicinal products (PDMPs).

The collaboration is expected to enhance Indonesia’s healthcare infrastructure, increase the availability of life-saving plasma therapies, and lay the foundation for local manufacturing capabilities.

Government grants fractionation licence

As part of the agreement, Indonesia’s Ministry of Health, through the Republic of Indonesia’s Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), has issued Takeda with a fractionation licence.

The approval authorises the company to collect plasma in Indonesia and process it through its global manufacturing network while the country develops its own plasma infrastructure.

To support the initiative, Takeda plans to invest up to US$30 million in establishing a comprehensive plasma ecosystem.

A key component of this investment will be the launch of a national pilot programme for plasma donation, marking an important step towards securing a sustainable domestic plasma supply.

Pilot programme to begin in 2027

The first phase of the project will run for two years and will focus on establishing plasma donation centres across Indonesia.

These pilot facilities, which are scheduled to begin operations in 2027 under Takeda’s BioLife network, will assess the feasibility of plasma collection, evaluate operational models, and inform plans for a broader nationwide rollout.

Takeda said the donation centres will operate according to internationally recognised quality, safety, and regulatory standards.

The company will also apply its global expertise in plasma collection to help ensure efficient and reliable operations while promoting donor safety.

In addition, the project is expected to create employment opportunities, particularly in healthcare, laboratory services, and related technical fields.

Takeda also intends to equip local professionals with specialised skills by providing training programmes that transfer international knowledge and best practices.

Plans for local manufacturing

Alongside the pilot programme, Takeda will assess the technical, regulatory, and commercial requirements for establishing a plasma-derived therapy manufacturing facility in Indonesia.

Once operational, the proposed facility could produce plasma-derived medicines for both the domestic market and selected international markets.

Until local manufacturing becomes available, plasma collected in Indonesia will be processed at Takeda’s existing global facilities.

According to the company, supplies derived from Indonesian plasma will be prioritised for domestic patients in line with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.

Takeda noted that demand for plasma-derived medicinal products continues to increase worldwide.

However, access to these therapies remains limited in several ASEAN countries, including Indonesia, due to challenges such as underdiagnosis, low disease awareness, and constrained plasma supplies.

Expanding access to plasma therapies

Commenting on the partnership, Ramy Riad, president of Takeda Plasma-Derived Therapies, said the initiative reflects the company’s long-term commitment to improving access to plasma-derived medicines while strengthening healthcare resilience and supporting sustainable health systems.

He added that, following the introduction of Takeda’s first plasma-derived medicinal products in Indonesia earlier this year, the new investment in plasma infrastructure represents another milestone in the company’s collaboration with the country.

According to Riad, Takeda will leverage its global expertise in plasma science to help Indonesia achieve its long-term healthcare objectives.

The announcement comes shortly after Takeda entered a strategic collaboration with Insilico Medicine to integrate the biotechnology company’s AI-powered pharma.AI platform into the discovery and development of new drug candidates.
