Rwanda partners with Siemens Healthineers to modernize national diagnostics

The partnership will bring more than 230 advanced medical systems to 19 public hospitals throughout the country.

RWANDA—The Government of Rwanda has signed a landmark five-year partnership with Siemens Healthineers to modernize the country’s public healthcare infrastructure.

The agreement, formalized on January 6, 2026, represents a major step toward strengthening diagnostic and treatment capabilities across Rwanda’s hospital network.

The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the global medical technology firm, will oversee the deployment of more than 230 advanced medical systems throughout 19 public hospitals nationwide.

This initiative aligns with Rwanda’s Vision 2050 and the Fifth Health Sector Strategic Plan, both of which prioritize accessible, high-quality healthcare for all citizens.

Advanced Medical Equipment for Enhanced Diagnostics

The partnership will introduce cutting-edge medical technology designed to improve early disease detection and treatment outcomes.

Hospitals will receive CT scanners, MRI machines, molecular imaging systems, ultrasound devices, and X-ray equipment.

Additionally, facilities will gain access to mammography units and cardiac catheterization laboratories, which are critical for diagnosing and treating heart conditions.

These technologies address a pressing healthcare challenge in Rwanda, where both communicable and non-communicable diseases account for approximately half of all deaths.

Enhanced diagnostic capabilities will enable healthcare providers to identify conditions earlier, leading to more effective treatment and better patient outcomes.

Building Local Healthcare Capacity

Beyond equipment installation, the partnership emphasizes comprehensive training and skills development for healthcare professionals.

Siemens Healthineers will work closely with Rwandan medical teams to ensure they can effectively operate and maintain the new systems.

This capacity-building component aims to improve service delivery while strengthening workforce retention across the public health sector.

The initiative will also integrate digital solutions and automation technologies into healthcare facilities.

These innovations are expected to streamline operations, reduce administrative burdens, and allow medical staff to focus more directly on patient care.

Expanding Access and Reducing Wait Times

The Ministry of Health projects that more than 500,000 patients will benefit annually from the expanded diagnostic services.

Patients across Rwanda will experience improved access to quality medical care, shorter waiting times for diagnostic procedures, and reduced need for referrals to distant specialized facilities.

This localized approach to advanced healthcare will particularly benefit rural communities that have historically faced barriers to accessing sophisticated medical services.

Minister of Health Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana described the partnership as transformative for Rwanda’s healthcare landscape.

He emphasized that combining modern technology with skilled healthcare professionals will create a sustainable and equitable health system capable of meeting the country’s growing needs.

Sustainable Healthcare Innovation

The partnership incorporates environmental sustainability measures aligned with Rwanda’s green development objectives.

Siemens Healthineers will implement energy-efficient installations and provide equipment life-extension programs and upgrade pathways to minimize environmental impact while maximizing the longevity of medical systems.

Vivek Kanade, Head of Siemens Healthineers for the Middle East and Africa, highlighted the company’s long-term commitment to improving patient outcomes in Rwanda.

He noted that the partnership will strengthen local medical expertise while supporting innovation in healthcare delivery across the region.

Rwanda’s healthcare modernization efforts also support the country’s broader ambition to establish itself as a regional medical tourism hub.
