TerraPower Isotopes breaks ground on landmark Actinium-225 manufacturing facility in Philadelphia

The new 250,000-square-foot (23,226-square-metre) Bellwether Laboratory will significantly expand global production capacity for actinium-225 (Ac-225).

USA—TerraPower Isotopes has officially broken ground in Philadelphia’s Bellwether District on what it describes as the world’s largest actinium-225 production facility.

The company selected the site after a comprehensive nationwide evaluation that reviewed more than 350 potential locations and included 49 site visits across eight metropolitan areas.

Philadelphia ultimately emerged as the preferred location due to its strong pharmaceutical ecosystem, deep healthcare leadership, access to skilled talent, and proximity to leading academic and research institutions.

In addition, local and state-level support played a key role in strengthening the region’s appeal for advanced nuclear medicine manufacturing.

Expanding global supply of a critical medical isotope

The new 250,000-square-foot (23,226-square-metre) Bellwether Laboratory will significantly expand global production capacity for actinium-225 (Ac-225).

When combined with capacity upgrades at the company’s existing laboratory in Everett, Washington, TerraPower Isotopes expects output to increase twentyfold.

Actinium-225 is a rare, short-lived alpha-emitting radioisotope used in targeted alpha therapy, a precision cancer treatment approach that links radioactive atoms to molecules such as monoclonal antibodies.

Once delivered into the body, these compounds seek out cancer cells and deliver highly localized radiation, minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue while targeting solid tumors, metastases, and certain blood cancers such as leukemia.

However, global access to Ac-225 remains severely constrained due to limited production capacity, making it one of the most scarce isotopes used in modern nuclear medicine.

Industry experts have long identified supply shortages as a key barrier to advancing clinical trials and expanding patient access to targeted alpha therapies.

Strategic investment in nuclear medicine manufacturing

TerraPower Isotopes stated that the Bellwether Laboratory will position the company as a leading global supplier of Ac-225, directly addressing long-standing supply bottlenecks in the radiopharmaceutical sector.

The facility is designed to meet growing demand from pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies developing next-generation cancer therapies.

“This facility represents a defining milestone in our mission, enabling production at a scale the industry has never achieved and supporting broader access to innovative cancer treatments.”

Building a next-generation production hub

Scott Claunch, president of TerraPower Isotopes, emphasized that the facility has been purpose-built for a rapidly evolving therapeutic landscape.

He noted that the Bellwether Laboratory will integrate advanced production systems and a highly specialized workforce to support consistent and scalable isotope output.

The company has also indicated in recent communications that it continues to advance engineering and regulatory preparations across its isotope production network, with a focus on strengthening supply chain resilience for radiopharmaceutical developers working in targeted cancer therapies.
