Abu Dhabi Lab earns WHO accreditation for measles & rubella

UAE—The Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre has announced that its Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory, based at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, has received accreditation from the World Health Organization as a national reference laboratory for measles and rubella.

 The recognition places the facility within the WHO global laboratory network that monitors and supports the control of both diseases across different regions.

The designation highlights Abu Dhabi’s expanding role in global health security, particularly in strengthening systems that detect, track, and respond to infectious disease threats.

It also reflects growing international confidence in the emirate’s diagnostic capacity and public health infrastructure.

Strengthening disease detection and surveillance systems

The accreditation reinforces the laboratory’s ability to accurately identify measles and rubella cases while improving early detection and response capabilities.

In addition, it supports ongoing national and regional efforts to eliminate both diseases through stronger surveillance and coordinated public health action.

The laboratory uses advanced serological and molecular testing methods that allow faster confirmation of suspected cases.

As a result, health authorities can respond more quickly, reduce transmission risks, and improve data-driven decision-making across the health system.
