Egypt’s Reme-D raises US$1.45M to expand molecular diagnostics across Africa

EGYPT—Egyptian healthtech startup Reme-D has raised US$1.45 million in a Pre-Series A funding round led by Anara Impact Capital to expand the production of its molecular diagnostic tests and strengthen its presence across Africa and other underserved markets.

The funding round also attracted investment from the Global Innovation Fund, Africa Health Ventures and other undisclosed investors.

 It follows a US$500,000 investment from the Global Innovation Fund in April and will enable Reme-D to increase manufacturing capacity, expand into new markets and develop additional diagnostic products.

Expanding access to molecular diagnostics

Founded in 2023 by Salma Tammam, Reme-D develops molecular diagnostic tests for diseases including tuberculosis (TB), HIV, hepatitis and human papillomavirus (HPV).

The company designs its tests to remain stable at higher temperatures, reducing reliance on cold-chain storage and making the products easier to transport and use in remote areas with limited healthcare infrastructure.

Since its launch, the Cairo-based company has developed and commercialized 30 diagnostic products and supplied more than 550,000 tests across Egypt, Kenya and Sudan.

The company has also expanded its work beyond conventional laboratory settings.

Recently, Reme-D equipped a solar-powered mobile laboratory commissioned by the World Health Organization’s Egypt office to support the country’s surveillance of vector-borne diseases.

The initiative demonstrates how the company’s diagnostic technologies can support testing and disease monitoring in locations where access to conventional laboratory infrastructure remains limited.

Tenfold increase in manufacturing capacity

As part of its expansion plans, Reme-D intends to relocate to a new 1,500-square-meter manufacturing facility.

The facility is expected to increase the company’s production capacity tenfold and support the development of new tests for genetic diseases and cancer.

The planned expansion comes as African healthcare systems seek to improve access to diagnostic services while reducing dependence on imported medical products.

Many countries across the continent continue to import a large share of their diagnostic equipment and laboratory consumables, exposing healthcare providers to supply chain disruptions, higher costs and delays in accessing essential products.

By manufacturing molecular diagnostic tests locally, Reme-D aims to reduce delivery times and costs while improving access to advanced testing for diseases that continue to place a significant burden on public health systems.

The company’s temperature-resilient products could also help address infrastructure challenges in regions where reliable refrigeration is difficult to maintain.

By reducing the need for continuous cold-chain storage, the tests can potentially reach healthcare facilities and communities beyond major urban centres.

Targeting genetic and cancer diagnostics

Reme-D’s planned expansion into genetic disease and cancer diagnostics will broaden its product portfolio as demand for advanced testing grows across Africa.

Healthcare systems are increasingly strengthening screening and early detection programmes, creating greater demand for accessible and reliable diagnostic technologies.

The latest investment will therefore support the company’s efforts to scale its manufacturing operations, expand its geographic reach, and introduce new diagnostic products.

Reme-D will also seek to build on its existing presence in Egypt, Kenya, and Sudan as it targets additional underserved markets across Africa.
