Moscow expands AI-powered radiology platform across Russian regions

More than 2,400 medical organizations in 75 Russian regions, together with several federal medical institutions, now have access to the platform.

RUSSIA—Moscow is expanding the use of artificial intelligence in healthcare through the MosMedAI digital platform, which enables medical institutions across Russia to use AI services to support the interpretation of radiology examinations.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin and Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko visited the Moscow Center for Diagnostics and Telemedicine, a leading institution for radiology, instrumental diagnostics, and the application of AI in clinical practice.

The center also hosts Russia’s first reference center for radiology, which is among the largest of its kind globally.

MosMedAI expands access to AI diagnostics

During the visit, Sobyanin held a videoconference with health officials from four Russian regions to discuss the rollout of MosMedAI in regional medical institutions.

The platform allows healthcare facilities to remotely process radiology studies using AI services, helping doctors obtain additional diagnostic information without requiring regions to develop their own systems.

According to Sobyanin, MosMedAI was launched in 2024 on the directive of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Since its launch, the platform has processed more than 18 million studies nationwide, including more than 1.1 million radiology examinations each month.

More than 2,400 medical organizations in 75 Russian regions, together with several federal medical institutions, now have access to the platform.

Users include the Almazov National Medical Research Centre, Kuban State Medical University, and the Federal Medical and Biological Agency.

18 AI services support radiology

MosMedAI currently provides 18 AI based diagnostic services covering CT scans, X rays, fluorograms and mammograms.

Several services can identify multiple conditions from a single image, including coronary heart disease, ischemic stroke, intracranial hemorrhage, pneumothorax, lung cancer, pulmonary emphysema, chest abnormalities, breast cancer, rib fractures and aortic aneurysms.

Regional healthcare authorities connect their medical organizations to the platform through a single access point.

The service is provided free of charge, while each region can choose which AI diagnostic services to activate.

The process is designed to integrate into routine clinical workflows.

After a patient undergoes an imaging examination, the digital image is transmitted to the relevant MosMedAI service.

The AI system analyzes the image and highlights potential abnormalities.

The results then return to the regional medical facility within minutes.

The attending physician remains responsible for interpreting the findings and making the final diagnosis.

Russia develops AI standards for healthcare

Moscow specialists are also contributing to national standards governing the use of AI in healthcare.

A subcommittee of Technical Committee No. 164, “Artificial Intelligence,” operates at the Center for Diagnostics and Telemedicine.

To date, 28 national standards have been introduced, including six in 2026.

They cover the technology lifecycle, from data and algorithm requirements to technical and clinical testing, safety and quality assurance.

Founded in 1996, the Moscow Center for Diagnostics and Telemedicine operates within the Social Development Complex of the Moscow City Government.

Its work includes radiology, AI implementation, scientific research, healthcare organization and professional training.
