Anaconda Biomed raises US$56M to advance stroke thrombectomy portfolio

Anaconda is targeting the large vessel occlusion stroke market, where mechanical thrombectomy is used to remove blood clots from blocked cerebral arteries.

SPAIN — Anaconda Biomed has raised US$56 million to advance its mechanical thrombectomy catheter portfolio and complete a pivotal US investigational device exemption (IDE) study of its ANA funnel catheter.

The Spain-based medical device company said Omega Funds led the financing, with participation from new investor FOCO, a co-investment fund established by the Spanish government and managed by the Spanish Development Finance Company (COFIDES).

Existing investors Asabys, Ysios Capital and CDTI also joined the round.

Funding to support pivotal study

A significant portion of the financing will support completion of the ATHENA pivotal IDE study (NCT06370182), which is evaluating the ANA funnel catheter for treating acute ischaemic stroke.

Anaconda said ANA combines aspiration with flow arrest and flow reversal to support clot capture and retrieval.

The company is developing the catheter to address challenges associated with clot fragmentation and the movement of embolic material into downstream vessels during thrombectomy procedures.

Trent Reutiman, CEO of Anaconda Biomed, said the funding would support the company’s efforts to advance acute stroke treatment and complete the clinical and regulatory work required for the technology.

He added that the participation of new and existing investors provides funding for the company to continue developing its technology platform.

Competition in aspiration thrombectomy

Anaconda is targeting the large vessel occlusion stroke market, where mechanical thrombectomy is used to remove blood clots from blocked cerebral arteries.

The company said approximately seven million people die from stroke each year, with ischaemic stroke accounting for about 65% of these deaths.

It estimates that around 30% of eligible patients currently receive mechanical thrombectomy.

According to GlobalData analysis cited by Anaconda, nearly 270,000 mechanical thrombectomy procedures are expected to be performed globally in 2026, indicating substantial room for wider adoption.

The company’s planned entry into the US market would place ANA alongside established aspiration catheter manufacturers.

Penumbra, now part of Boston Scientific following a reported US$14.5 billion acquisition in January 2026, is among the established competitors.

In June, Penumbra’s Thunderbolt system received US Food and Drug Administration
