Aster Hospital Mankhool reaches 10,000 cardiac procedures milestone

UAE—Aster Hospital Mankhool in Dubai has performed 10,000 procedures at its Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory since 2018, reflecting growing demand for minimally invasive cardiovascular care in the UAE.

The hospital, part of Aster DM Healthcare, also ranked second in the UAE and 253rd globally for Cardiology in Newsweek’s World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2027.

Patient and procedure profile

Hospital data from more than 3,500 patients showed that over 90% came from South Asia, with Indian nationals accounting for more than 65%, followed by Pakistani and Filipino patients.

An analysis of more than 6,000 patients indicated that cardiac interventions also involved relatively younger adults.

More than 35% were aged 41 to 50, while 15% to 20% were aged 31 to 40. About 30% were aged 51 to 60, and 10% to 15% were aged 60 or older.

The Cath Lab provides coronary angiography and angioplasty, percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty, STEMI interventions, thrombectomy and atherectomy.

It also supports optical coherence tomography, fractional flow reserve assessment, stenting, transcatheter aortic valve implantation, MitraClip procedures, implantable cardioverter defibrillator and pacemaker implantation, as well as other structural and endovascular interventions.

Expanding cardiac capacity

According to the hospital, the Cath Lab has averaged more than 1,200 procedures annually since 2019.

Procedure volumes increased by approximately 2% between 2020 and 2025, with about 1,470 procedures performed in 2025.

The hospital expects to perform approximately 1,600 procedures in 2026.

Dr. Sherbaz Bichu, CEO of Aster Hospitals and Clinics, UAE, Oman and Bahrain, said the milestone reflects the role of timely intervention, technology and multidisciplinary teamwork in cardiac care.

He added that the Cath Lab has operated around the clock since its launch to support emergency cardiac procedures.

The unit manages conditions including angina, cardiomyopathy, NSTEMI, STEMI and unstable angina, providing both emergency and elective catheter based interventions.

More than 60% of the 10,000 procedures were performed by Dr. Naveed Ahmed, Head of Cardiac Services.

In 2019, Aster Hospital Mankhool reported becoming the second hospital in the UAE to perform orbital atherectomy, a procedure used to modify heavily calcified coronary plaque before further intervention.

Multidisciplinary cardiac care

The Cath Lab also supports vascular and endovascular surgery, radiology, neurology and nephrology. Dr. Ahmed said the department follows clinical protocols aligned with international standards and uses advanced technologies according to clinical need.

The milestone comes as catheter based interventions continue to form a substantial part of cardiovascular care.

Data from the European Society of Cardiology and European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions Atlas of Interventional Cardiology reported that procedures to open blocked coronary arteries accounted for more than 90% of catheter-based cardiovascular procedures across 50 European countries.

 The report recorded a median of 2,220 such procedures per million people, including 509 emergency procedures per million for STEMI.
