Uganda’s C-Care IHK collaborates with Indian oncology giants to reduce medical tourism

Each year, approximately 20,000 Ugandan patients travel to India seeking specialized cancer care unavailable at home.

UGANDA—C-Care IHK has launched a strategic partnership with India’s leading cancer treatment institutions, Gleneagles Hospitals and Fortis Hospitals, to transform Uganda’s oncology landscape.

The collaboration aims to bring advanced cancer treatment capabilities to Ugandan patients, reducing the need for expensive overseas medical travel.

The partnership kicked off with a high-level medical education session in Kampala, led by Dr. Rajeev Vijayakumar, a distinguished hemato-oncologist.

The session explored how bone marrow transplant services, cutting-edge blood cancer treatments, and genetic-based cancer therapies can integrate into Uganda’s healthcare system.

The Medical Tourism Challenge

These medical journeys impose significant financial strain on families, create emotional hardship, and force patients to leave their support networks during critical treatment periods.

Dr. Alicia Adatia explained that global knowledge partnerships provide the foundation for building lasting local expertise.

She emphasized that modern cancer treatment has shifted away from standardized approaches toward personalized medicine tailored to individual patients.

“Through partnerships like this, we ensure Ugandan patients can access the latest global advances in cancer care without leaving the country,” Dr. Adatia said.

Genomics and precision medicine

Dr. Vijayakumar highlighted how genetic testing revolutionizes cancer treatment.

Clinicians can now identify specific genetic mutations driving cancer growth and select therapies targeting those exact changes.

This precision approach improves treatment success while reducing harmful side effects.

“The landscape of cancer care is changing rapidly. Introducing Bone Marrow Transplant expertise and genomic insights into local practice bridges the gap between complex diagnoses and effective, life-saving treatments,” Dr. Vijayakumar noted.

New treatment frontiers

The medical session examined recent breakthroughs transforming oncology.

Targeted therapies have changed outcomes for previously difficult-to-treat cancers, while immunotherapy has created new possibilities for melanoma, lung cancer, and kidney cancer by activating the body’s immune system against cancer cells.

C-Care IHK has invested substantially in advanced diagnostic imaging, specialized oncology infrastructure, and multidisciplinary cancer teams.

These resources position the hospital to manage complex cases locally, including advanced blood cancers requiring transplant evaluation and genomic-guided treatment planning.

Dr. Miriam Mutero Musinga, General Manager of C-Care IHK, outlined the hospital’s vision for comprehensive cancer care grounded in clinical excellence and international collaboration.

“Our partnership with internationally recognized oncology centers strengthens our ability to deliver a full continuum of cancer care, from early diagnosis to advanced specialized treatment,” Dr. Musinga said.

The collaboration represents C-Care IHK’s commitment to elevating Uganda’s oncology services, helping more patients access world-class care close to home while improving outcomes for families nationwide.
