AUBMC partners with Philips to deploy first helium-free BlueSeal XE MRI in Lebanon

LEBANON—The American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC) has installed the Middle East’s first Philips BlueSeal XE magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system, strengthening its position in precision medicine and advanced diagnostic imaging.

The investment forms part of the hospital’s broader strategy to expand access to next-generation medical technologies despite Lebanon’s ongoing healthcare and economic challenges.

AI-powered imaging for faster diagnosis

The new MRI platform combines Philips’ BlueSeal helium-free technology with SmartSpeed Precise, an artificial intelligence-powered imaging solution that delivers scans up to three times faster while improving image sharpness by up to 80%.

It also reduces image artifacts, helping clinicians make more confident diagnoses while shortening examination times and improving patient comfort.

The system supports AI-assisted reporting and instant image-quality assessment for complex conditions, including cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and multiple sclerosis.

In addition, its sealed-helium design eliminates the need for helium refills, reducing maintenance requirements and shielding operations from global helium supply disruptions.

The launch ceremony brought together AUB President Fadlo R. Khuri, Ministry of Public Health Director General Dr. Weam Abou Hamdan, representing Health Minister Rakan Nassereldine, Dutch Ambassador Frank Mollen, Philips executives, Intermedic representatives, clinicians and government officials.

Khuri described the installation as more than a technology upgrade. He said it reflects AUBMC’s commitment to ensuring patients in Lebanon and across the region receive world-class healthcare.

Abou Hamdan added that the achievement highlights Lebanon’s ability to sustain medical innovation while advancing digital transformation through partnerships with academic healthcare institutions.

Strengthening regional diagnostic capacity

Philips Country Manager for the Levant Mohammed Saleh said the partnership demonstrates how intelligent software can help clinicians make faster decisions and improve patient care.

He noted that the helium-free system also simplifies long-term maintenance while supporting uninterrupted MRI services.

The project was completed through close collaboration between AUBMC and Philips specialists and is now undergoing final optimisation before full clinical deployment.

During the launch, attendees viewed demonstrations highlighting the scanner’s advanced imaging capabilities.

AUBMC’s Department of Diagnostic Radiology remains the largest imaging centre in Lebanon, offering advanced diagnostic and interventional services.

Alongside the BlueSeal XE MRI, the medical centre recently introduced four additional high-end medical systems and fully modernised the Suhayl M. Uthman Endoscopy Unit to expand specialised patient care.

The installation comes as Philips continues to expand its AI-enabled imaging portfolio.

In recent months, the company has highlighted the broader adoption of its BlueSeal helium-free MRI technology worldwide, with nearly 2,000 systems installed to improve sustainability, reduce operating costs, and expand access to advanced diagnostic imaging.
