This move introduces advanced tools like the da Vinci robotic surgical system, promising to elevate medical care across the region.

NIGERIA—Nigeria’s Imo State Government has launched a transformative initiative in healthcare by signing a multi-partner agreement to build a cutting-edge medical facility equipped with artificial intelligence and robotic surgery.
Governor Hope Uzodimma recently greenlit the deal, paving the way for the nation’s first such collaboration.
This move introduces advanced tools like the da Vinci robotic surgical system, promising to elevate medical care across the region.
Governor Uzodimma celebrated the agreement as a pivotal achievement in the state’s medical program.
He emphasized the commitment to creating a world-class facility that leverages AI, robotic surgery, and top-tier care for residents.
The partnership unites the Imo State Government with Heartland Hospital Management Corporation, The Prostate Clinic, and Imo Digital City Limited.
Together, they blend hospital management reforms with innovative surgical technologies.
At the heart of this project stands Professor Kingsley Ekwueme, a world-class robotic surgeon and the trailblazer of robotic surgery in West Africa, who originates from Imo State.
Governor Uzodimma highlighted the fortune of having such expertise at home.
“Charity begins at home,” he noted, adding that Ekwueme has pledged to return his skills, backed fully by the government.
The state has already approved all required documents, targeting full operations by year’s end and with this approval, implementation kicks off right away.
This development promises to curb medical tourism abroad and turn Imo State into a hub for advanced healthcare.
Governor Uzodimma explained that it will draw patients from beyond the state’s borders while delivering high-quality services locally.
Professor Ekwueme described the partnership as unprecedented in Nigeria.
He called it a historic milestone, especially for Imo State, and accepted the governor’s invitation after observing profound changes in the local health sector.
Ekwueme pointed to the Imo State Health Insurance Scheme as a key driver of this progress.
The program has enrolled over 1.4 million people, bringing healthcare directly to communities in an extraordinary way.
For him, introducing robotic surgery to his home state feels both professional and deeply personal.
He first pioneered the technology in Lagos, West Africa’s initial site, and now delights in expanding it to Imo, where its benefits will resonate widely.
Under the agreement, Heartland Hospital Management Corporation oversees daily operations.
Meanwhile, The Prostate Clinic and Imo Digital City Limited supply the essential technical setup and specialized equipment.
Officials at the Imo State Government House, where the signing occurred, confirmed that teams will now install robotic systems and train staff immediately.
