C-Care opens specialist hospital in Gulu, Northern Uganda

UGANDA — C-Care has officially inaugurated C-Care Hospital Gulu, marking a major step in expanding specialist healthcare across Northern Uganda.

The new facility, operated by C-Care, extends advanced medical services to the Acholi, Lango, and West Nile sub-regions, where patients previously travelled long distances to Kampala for treatment.

The launch coincides with the company’s 30th year of operations and reinforces its strategy of building an integrated healthcare system across Uganda.

It also strengthens the organisation’s network of 20 clinics nationwide, with the Gulu hospital emerging as one of its most significant infrastructure investments to date.

Expanding access to advanced medical services

Northern Uganda has historically experienced gaps in specialist healthcare due to limited diagnostic infrastructure and uneven distribution of medical services.

The new hospital addresses these challenges by consolidating emergency care, specialist consultations, and advanced diagnostics within a single facility.

It provides on-site CT scanning, digital X-ray imaging, and streamlined outpatient and inpatient services designed to reduce referral delays.

By integrating diagnostics directly with treatment units, the hospital enhances continuity of care and improves clinical decision-making for healthcare providers.

Strengthening clinical capacity and patient outcomes

Speaking at the launch, Andrew Mugalu, General Manager of C-Care IMC, noted that the facility enables clinicians to deliver evidence-based care with greater confidence through immediate access to diagnostic tools.

He added that the hospital significantly reduces the need for patients to travel to Kampala for specialised services, a challenge that has long affected access to timely treatment in the region.

Furthermore, he emphasized that faster diagnosis and intervention will contribute to improved patient outcomes and reduced delays in critical care pathways.

Leadership perspective on healthcare equity

Guest of Honour Helene Echevin, CEO of C-Care International, stated that the investment reflects a core belief that geography should not determine the quality of healthcare a person receives.

She explained that Gulu now hosts a facility capable of delivering definitive treatment locally rather than focusing solely on stabilisation before referral.

She further added that elevating the Gulu site into a full-scale hospital establishes a long-term foundation for clinical excellence in Northern Uganda.

Future expansion and regional healthcare transformation

C-Care Hospital Gulu has outlined phased expansion plans that include an additional 55 inpatient beds, a modern intensive care unit, a dedicated mother-and-child centre, and enhanced emergency services.

These developments aim to strengthen healthcare delivery capacity and meet rising demand for specialised care in the region.
