EDE signs landmark MoU with Novo Nordisk to boost UAE pharmaceutical manufacturing

UAE—The Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Novo Nordisk to strengthen cooperation in pharmaceutical manufacturing, accelerate the adoption of advanced technologies, and support the growth of a more innovative and sustainable pharmaceutical ecosystem in the UAE.

The agreement comes just weeks after Novo Nordisk announced plans to establish a major regional pharmaceutical distribution centre in the UAE, further reinforcing the country’s position as a global hub for healthcare logistics and pharmaceutical manufacturing.

The facility will be one of only three global distribution centres operated by the company worldwide and is expected to serve up to 70 countries across the Gulf region, Africa, and Central Asia.

Once fully operational, the hub is projected to support access to treatment for more than 2.6 million patients.

Strengthening Pharmaceutical Supply Chains

Under the new agreement, EDE and Novo Nordisk will work together to enhance pharmaceutical supply chain security by increasing in-country value creation and expanding strategic partnerships that help maintain a steady supply of medicines.

The collaboration aims to improve the resilience of the UAE’s healthcare system while supporting the long-term availability of essential and innovative therapies nationwide.

It also aligns with the UAE’s broader efforts to strengthen pharmaceutical security and reduce vulnerabilities linked to global supply chain disruptions.

Developing Local Talent and Expertise

A key component of the partnership focuses on talent development and workforce capacity building.

Through training programmes, knowledge-sharing initiatives, and professional development opportunities, the agreement seeks to strengthen local expertise within the pharmaceutical sector.

The collaboration will also create opportunities for Emirati students and young professionals to participate in academic programmes, internships, and practical industry placements.

These initiatives are designed to equip the next generation of pharmaceutical professionals with the skills needed to support the country’s expanding life sciences sector.

Supporting Innovation and Research

The MoU also seeks to foster a regulatory environment that encourages innovation and accelerates access to new therapies.

Both parties will explore ways to support research and development activities while increasing participation by UAE-based institutions and stakeholders in pharmaceutical product development projects.

The initiative is expected to facilitate greater collaboration between industry, regulators, and research institutions, helping bring advanced treatments to patients more quickly while supporting the country’s ambitions to become a regional centre for healthcare innovation.

Recent Momentum for Novo Nordisk in the UAE

The agreement follows a series of recent developments involving Novo Nordisk in the UAE.

Earlier last month, the Emirates Drug Establishment approved the oral form of Wegovy (semaglutide) for weight management and cardiovascular risk reduction.

Shortly afterwards, Novo Nordisk launched the weight-loss pill in the UAE, making it one of the first markets outside the United States to offer the treatment.

In addition to its planned distribution hub, Novo Nordisk has announced plans to establish a scientific office in the UAE and roll out talent development programmes for Emirati nationals.

These investments reflect the company’s growing commitment to the region and support the UAE’s efforts to attract high-value pharmaceutical investment and innovation.
