EGYPT—Egypt’s Ministry of Health and Population has partnered with Roche Diagnostics to build a national digital pathology network designed to improve cancer diagnosis across the country.
Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar attended the signing ceremony at the Egyptian Center for Disease Control (EGYCDC), where Mohamed Hassani, Assistant Minister for Health Initiatives, and Moataz Nassef, Chairman of Roche Egypt Diagnostics, formalized the agreement.
Abdel Ghaffar characterized the initiative as a strategic advancement toward precision medicine and digital diagnostics.
The network will create a nationwide digital infrastructure that enhances diagnostic accuracy while supporting more effective treatment planning for patients throughout Egypt.
Seven-location rollout phase
The program will launch at seven strategic locations during its first phase.
These sites include the EGYCDC, the Egyptian Center for Medical Research at Ain Shams University, and Nasser Institute Hospital.
Additionally, the ministry’s central laboratories will participate alongside specialized oncology centers in Sohag, Kafr El-Sheikh, and Beheira governorates.
The network operates by converting traditional pathology samples into high-resolution digital images.
Medical professionals can then analyze these images using artificial intelligence technology, which helps overcome geographic barriers between patients in remote areas and specialized medical experts in urban centers.
Dramatic reduction in treatment timelines
The minister pointed to significant progress already achieved through the presidential Women’s Health Initiative.
That program has dramatically reduced the average time from suspected cancer diagnosis to treatment initiation from 270 days to just 49 days.
Health officials aim to further compress this timeline to 28 days in the near future.
Digital pathology tools promise to boost diagnostic accuracy to approximately 92 percent, compared with roughly 85 percent achieved through conventional methods.
This improvement means fewer misdiagnoses and more patients receiving appropriate treatment sooner.
Long-term partnership vision
Nassef emphasized that the agreement represents an extension of Roche Egypt’s ongoing collaboration with the Ministry of Health.
The partnership focuses on advancing diagnostic technologies while strengthening Egypt’s overall healthcare system capabilities.
The company views this initiative as a long-term commitment to improving patient outcomes across the nation.
Thomas Baumgartner, Deputy Head of Mission at the Swiss Embassy in Egypt, noted that the project highlights expanding healthcare cooperation between Egypt and Switzerland.
He stated that the initiative will significantly strengthen the country’s diagnostic infrastructure while fostering innovation in medical technology.
The digital pathology network represents a fundamental shift in how Egypt approaches cancer diagnosis and treatment.
By leveraging cutting-edge technology and international partnerships, the country aims to provide faster, more accurate diagnoses to patients regardless of their geographic location.
