Emirates Health Services completes the UAE’s first pediatric robotic surgeries at Al Qassimi Hospital

UAE—Al Qassimi Women’s and Children’s Hospital, part of Emirates Health Services, has successfully completed its first series of advanced paediatric robotic surgeries, marking a significant milestone in specialised child healthcare in the country.

The procedures represent the first use of robotic surgical systems for paediatric patients at the facility and highlight the growing role of precision medicine in the UAE’s public health sector.

The hospital introduced the technology as part of its broader strategy to expand minimally invasive surgical options and align with global standards in clinical care.

Dr. Safiya Al Khajeh, Director of Al Qassimi Women’s and Children’s Hospital, said the achievement marks a turning point in the hospital’s journey to expand its specialised surgical services.

She emphasized that the initiative reflects Emirates Health Services’ commitment to innovation, clinical excellence, and patient-centred care.

She added that the integration of robotic surgical systems has strengthened the hospital’s ability to perform complex procedures with improved precision and control.

According to her, this advancement places the institution among a select group of global centres offering paediatric robotic surgery.

Dr. Khalid Khalfan, Consultant Paediatric Surgeon and Assistant Director for Medical Affairs, noted that the introduction of robotic surgery represents more than a technological upgrade.

He explained that it broadens access to safer and less invasive treatment options for children, reducing surgical strain while improving recovery experiences.

Dr. Mohamed Hassan, who led the surgical procedures, highlighted the technical advantages of robotic-assisted systems.

He explained that the platform enables surgeons to operate within small and delicate anatomical spaces using high-definition three-dimensional visualization and ultra-fine instruments that replicate natural hand movements.

He further noted that this approach builds on the hospital’s established expertise in minimally invasive surgery while enhancing accuracy in complex paediatric cases.

Multidisciplinary surgical collaboration

The inaugural procedures included complex gastrointestinal and urological surgeries performed by a multidisciplinary team comprising paediatric surgeons, anaesthesiologists, specialist nurses, and technical support staff.
