King Abdullah Medical City adopts CardioMEMS HF system for remote heart failure monitoring

The CardioMEMS HF System continuously monitors pressure within the pulmonary artery, providing healthcare professionals with critical information about a patient’s cardiovascular status.

SAUDI ARABIA— King Abdullah Medical City (KAMC), a member of the Makkah Health Cluster, has introduced the CardioMEMS HF System at its Heart Health Centre, becoming one of the healthcare institutions in Saudi Arabia to adopt the globally approved technology for the remote monitoring of patients living with heart failure.

The initiative supports the Kingdom’s efforts to expand the use of smart healthcare technologies while enabling clinicians to detect signs of disease progression earlier and deliver more personalized treatment.

Advanced remote monitoring for heart failure

The CardioMEMS HF System continuously monitors pressure within the pulmonary artery, providing healthcare professionals with critical information about a patient’s cardiovascular status.

By tracking changes in pulmonary artery pressure, the system can identify early warning signs of worsening heart failure and fluid accumulation several days or even weeks before patients begin to experience noticeable symptoms.

This early detection allows cardiologists to intervene sooner by adjusting medications or other aspects of a patient’s treatment plan before the condition deteriorates.

As a result, the technology is expected to reduce emergency hospital admissions related to heart failure while improving long-term clinical outcomes and patients’ overall quality of life.

Unlike conventional monitoring methods, which often depend on patients reporting symptoms after they appear, the CardioMEMS HF System provides continuous physiological data that enables a more proactive approach to disease management.

The information generated by the system helps physicians make timely, evidence-based decisions while minimizing the risk of severe complications associated with heart failure.

Designed for patients at higher risk

According to the medical team at King Abdullah Medical City, the technology is primarily intended for patients diagnosed with Class II and Class III heart failure under the American Heart Association (AHA) classification system.

These patients remain at significant risk of disease progression despite ongoing treatment and are considered among those most likely to benefit from continuous remote monitoring.

By identifying changes in pulmonary artery pressure before symptoms worsen, clinicians can optimise treatment plans more effectively and help prevent repeated episodes of heart failure decompensation that often require hospitalisation.

Wireless implant and home-based monitoring

The CardioMEMS HF System consists of an ultra-small wireless sensor that physicians permanently implant into the pulmonary artery during a minimally invasive right-heart catheterization procedure.

The device does not require batteries or connecting wires, allowing it to function safely inside the body over the long term.

The system also includes a next-generation home monitoring unit that enables patients to record daily measurements without visiting a healthcare facility.

During the process, patients simply lie on a specially designed electronic pillow for a few minutes while the device captures pulmonary artery pressure readings.

The information is then transmitted wirelessly to the treating medical team, allowing clinicians to review the data remotely and make timely adjustments to therapy whenever necessary.

This continuous flow of clinical information supports closer follow-up between hospital visits while helping healthcare providers respond promptly to changes in a patient’s condition.
