Saudi physicians perform landmark heart surgery at King’s College London Hospital Jeddah

The procedure marks a significant milestone that positions Saudi Arabia as a destination for highly specialized medical care meeting global standards.

SAUDI ARABIA — A Saudi medical team led by Dr. Seraj Abdullah Abualnaja, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, has successfully performed one of the world’s rarest heart procedures, marking  a new era for cardiac care in the Kingdom

The surgery, the first of its kind in Saudi Arabia, took place at King’s College London Hospital–Jeddah, further solidifying the nation’s reputation as a growing hub for advanced medical innovation and specialized healthcare.

The unprecedented procedure was carried out on a patient suffering from a Bicuspid Aortic Valve accompanied by severe stenosis and extensive calcification, compounded by a Dextrocardia diagnosis—a rare condition in which the heart is positioned on the right side of the chest.

This unique combination of complex anatomical factors poses an exceptional challenge for cardiologists worldwide, demanding precise technical expertise and the highest level of procedural accuracy.

Before the operation, the patient showed pronounced symptoms, including severe shortness of breath and an inability to perform daily activities.

Comprehensive diagnostic assessments, which included advanced CT scans and echocardiography, confirmed the severity of the condition.

These tests revealed atypical structural variations, a highly tortuous vascular pathway, and extensive calcification around the aortic valve, all of which significantly increased the risk associated with conventional open-heart surgery.

Because traditional surgery carried a high risk, Dr. Abualnaja and his team opted for a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) procedure.

This minimally invasive approach, performed using state-of-the-art interventional technology, required exceptional coordination and precision.

Throughout the intervention, the team encountered severe aortic tortuosity, which made navigation toward the valve extremely complex.

However, through advanced catheterization techniques and the team’s collective expertise, the intricate anatomical barriers were successfully overcome.

By maintaining complete procedural control and employing cutting-edge devices, the team was able to position and implant the new valve with extraordinary precision.

The operation concluded without any complications, marking a historic moment for Saudi cardiac medicine.

The patient’s recovery was equally remarkable. Within just two days, the patient was discharged from the hospital, showing stable heart function and requiring neither a pacemaker nor additional blood-pressure support—an outcome that reflects the quality and accuracy of the intervention.

Dr. Abualnaja expressed his pride in leading the team through what he described as one of the most complex cases known in the field of cardiac catheterization.

He noted that successfully performing a TAVR procedure for a patient with both Bicuspid Aortic Valve and Dextrocardia stands as a national milestone.

Beyond its medical significance, this landmark achievement underscores the advanced skill and dedication of Saudi healthcare professionals who continue to expand the boundaries of medical excellence within the Kingdom.

This remarkable success was made possible by the hospital’s robust medical infrastructure and its multidisciplinary teams specializing in cardiac catheterization, surgery, anesthesia, and intensive care.

As King’s College London Hospital—Jeddah continues to push the frontiers of clinical excellence, this achievement positions Saudi Arabia as a leading destination for highly specialized medical procedures and advanced interventional cardiology on a global scale.
