Minister of Economy visits Thumbay Medicity to support health and longevity tourism goals

UAE—His Excellency Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Tourism, has visited Thumbay Medicity in Ajman, highlighting the growing role of healthcare, medical education, and health tourism in the UAE’s diversified, knowledge-based economy.
Dr. Thumbay Moideen, Founder and President of Thumbay Group, received H.E. Bin Touq alongside Akbar Moideen Thumbay, Vice President of the Healthcare Division, and senior leaders from the Group’s academic and clinical institutions.
Focus on Health and Longevity Tourism
During the visit, H.E. Bin Touq said medical and longevity tourism represent rapidly expanding sectors worldwide.
He noted that the UAE continues to strengthen its infrastructure and capabilities to attract international patients and visitors while enhancing the competitiveness of its tourism industry.
According to the Minister, these efforts support the UAE’s ambition to become a leading global hub for advanced and sustainable health and wellness services.
He also highlighted Thumbay Group’s contribution to strengthening the country’s position in medical and longevity tourism.
The Group has established a network that attracts students from more than 111 countries and patients from across the region.
H.E. Bin Touq said institutions such as Thumbay Medicity help create specialized healthcare and educational experiences while attracting international talent, encouraging innovation and delivering services that meet international standards.
Integrated Healthcare and Education Model
H.E. Bin Touq toured Gulf Medical University (GMU), the region’s leading private medical university, as well as Thumbay Medicity’s academic hospitals, including Thumbay University Hospital, Thumbay Dental Hospital and Thumbay Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Hospital.
During the tour, Group representatives presented Thumbay Medicity’s integrated model, which brings education, patient care and research together within the same healthcare ecosystem.
They also highlighted GMU’s development since its establishment in 1998 and its growing international student community.
Today, GMU attracts students from more than 111 countries, giving it one of the most internationally diverse student bodies among medical universities worldwide.
The discussions also examined how private healthcare and academic institutions contribute to the national economy and support the UAE’s emergence as a destination for health and wellness tourism.
Participants further explored the role of institutions such as Thumbay Medicity in attracting international patients, students and investment.
Thumbay Group’s Vision
Commenting on the visit, Dr. Thumbay Moideen said it was a privilege to welcome H.E. Bin Touq to Thumbay Medicity.
“When we established Gulf Medical University in 1998, we set out to build institutions that would serve the UAE for generations—educating doctors, healing patients and advancing research from the UAE to the world,” he said.
He added that the Minister’s visit recognized the progress of that vision and the growing contribution of healthcare and medical education to the UAE’s tourism ambitions.
He reaffirmed the Group’s commitment to supporting the country’s goal of becoming a global hub for health tourism and knowledge-based industries.
Research and Innovation
The visit concluded with H.E. Bin Touq touring Thumbay Medicity’s research and innovation facilities, where he reviewed key projects and initiatives.
He also met faculty members, clinicians and students, who shared their experiences and perspectives on the Medicity’s educational and research environment.
