Unlike traditional rigid MRI coils that can feel cold and uncomfortable, the Snuggle coil wraps around patients like a soft blanket.

THE NETHERLANDS—Royal Philips has introduced a new medical imaging tool that promises to make MRI scans less frightening for young patients while delivering the high-quality results doctors need.
The company recently launched the InkSpace Imaging Snuggle™ pediatric body array coil, a blanket-like device designed specifically for children undergoing MRI scans on Philips 3.0T systems.
Making medical imaging less intimidating for children
Anyone who has watched a child prepare for an MRI knows how stressful the experience can be.
The massive machine, the confined space, and the need to stay perfectly still often overwhelm young patients.
Philips and InkSpace Imaging developed the Snuggle coil to address these challenges head-on.
Unlike traditional rigid MRI coils that can feel cold and uncomfortable, the Snuggle coil wraps around patients like a soft blanket.
Its lightweight, flexible design creates a more welcoming environment for children who might otherwise feel anxious or scared during their scan.
Advanced technology meets thoughtful design
The device doesn’t just prioritize comfort—it also delivers exceptional imaging quality.
The Snuggle coil features a high-density array that captures sharp, detailed images across various pediatric anatomies.
This combination of comfort and performance means doctors can get the images they need without putting children through additional scans or follow-up procedures.
For medical technologists, the coil offers practical advantages that streamline their workflow.
The flexible design makes it easier to position patients quickly and accurately, which translates to faster setup times and shorter overall scan duration.
These improvements help hospitals serve more patients while reducing the likelihood of having to repeat exams due to poor image quality or patient movement.
Expert perspectives on innovation
Dr. Ioannis Panagiotelis, who leads the MR division at Philips, emphasized how this collaboration brings together Philips’ expertise in MRI technology with InkSpace Imaging’s specialized focus on pediatric solutions.
He explained that the Snuggle coil demonstrates what becomes possible when designers prioritize the patient experience without compromising the clinical performance that healthcare providers depend on.
Dr. Peter Fischer, CEO of InkSpace Imaging, highlighted the specific challenge his team set out to solve: creating a pediatric imaging device that delivers both comfort and performance without forcing compromises on either front.
By making the Snuggle coil compatible with Philips 3.0T MRI systems, he noted, they can now bring this child-centered approach to more hospitals and help medical teams capture accurate images on the first attempt.
Regulatory approval and availability
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently cleared the Snuggle coil through its 510(k) process, validating the device’s safety and effectiveness.
InkSpace Imaging developed the coil as a modern alternative to the rigid, often uncomfortable devices that have traditionally been used in pediatric imaging.
The Snuggle pediatric coil for Philips 3.0T MR systems is currently available to hospitals and imaging centers throughout the United States.
Both companies plan to expand availability to additional regions in the coming months.
Philips and InkSpace Imaging continue exploring new opportunities to develop imaging technology that prioritizes both patient comfort and clinical efficiency, supporting radiologists, technologists, and families with safer, faster, and more effective diagnostic procedures.
