Egypt conducts first free heart valve procedures under universal health insurance at Port Said Hospital

The procedures took place at Al-Nasr Specialised Hospital in Port Said, representing a major advancement in accessible cardiac care for Egyptian citizens.

EGYPT—The Egyptian Healthcare Authority (EHA) has marked a significant milestone in the country’s healthcare system by completing the first two transcatheter pulmonary valve implantations (TPVIs) under the Universal Health Insurance scheme.

The procedures took place at Al-Nasr Specialised Hospital in Port Said, representing a major advancement in accessible cardiac care for Egyptian citizens.

These complex heart interventions, which typically cost more than EGP 1 million (USD 20,000) each when performed outside the insurance system, were provided completely free of charge to the patients.

Ahmed El-Sobky, Chairperson of the Egypt Healthcare Authority, described the successful operations as an “unprecedented qualitative leap” in the specialized medical services the state now offers its citizens.

Two lives transformed

The first patient to benefit from this advancement was an 18-year-old who had endured a challenging medical journey since birth.

Having undergone seven previous cardiac interventions throughout their life, the patient faced the procedure with hope for a more permanent solution.

Medical staff discharged the teenager in stable condition just 24 hours after the operation, marking a remarkably swift recovery.

The second patient, aged 16, presented an even more complex case.

Suffering from severe congenital heart defects since birth, the teenager had previously undergone four open-heart surgeries and two catheterizations in attempts to manage the condition.

Following the transcatheter valve implantation, doctors monitored the patient for 72 hours before discharge, ensuring complete stability.

Ending the cycle of repeated surgeries

El-Sobky emphasized that bringing this technology to Egypt aims to end the suffering of children who would otherwise require repeated open-heart surgeries throughout their lives.

The transcatheter approach offers a safer and more stable alternative to traditional surgical methods, reducing both physical trauma and recovery time for young patients.

The Egyptian government has prioritized child health in its national agenda, ensuring that the latest global medical advancements become available domestically rather than forcing families to seek treatment abroad. By incorporating these cutting-edge procedures into the Universal Health Insurance umbrella, the state removes the financial barrier that previously prevented many families from accessing life-saving care.

Africa’s only certified team

The procedures were performed by the sole medical team in Africa certified to conduct transcatheter pulmonary valve transplantations.

Abdel Rahman El-Afifi, Egypt’s leading expert in pulmonary valve transplantation, led the team.

El-Afifi serves as head of pediatric cardiology at both Al-Nasr Specialised Hospital and the prestigious Magdi Yacoub Hospitals.

Supporting El-Afifi, the surgical team included consultants Sherif Suleiman and Mohamed Tawfik. Pediatric cardiology specialists Wafaa Abu El-Kheir, Elham Rabie, Haidi Hassan, Ivan Emad, and Asmaa El-Baz provided essential expertise throughout the procedures.

Ahmed Samir managed anesthesia, while a dedicated nursing and technical team ensured seamless operation.

This team comprised catheterization operations lead Aya Ibrahim Al-Gharib, nursing specialist Radia Ali, nursing technicians Samar Ahmed Ibrahim, Zainab Hamed Mohamed, and Shaimaa Mohamed Atta, alongside radiology technician Mahmoud Al-Maghrabi.

Precision medicine comes to Egypt

The Egyptian Healthcare Authority highlighted that TPVI ranks among the most precise medical interventions available worldwide.

The procedure requires exceptional skill, advanced equipment, and meticulous attention to detail throughout every stage.

El-Sobky noted that Al-Nasr Specialised Hospital now has the complete infrastructure to perform such high-precision interventions in accordance with international standards, including qualified medical personnel and state-of-the-art technical equipment.

This achievement aligns with the EHA’s broader strategy to transform its health facilities into global centers of excellence.

The authority continues to work to expand advanced medical interventions within the new insurance system, building beneficiary confidence in the efficiency and long-term sustainability of Egypt’s evolving healthcare infrastructure.
