Egypt establishes Vaccine City to become Africa’s pharmaceutical manufacturing hub

The government has set a bold target: by 2030, Egypt will manufacture 140 million human vaccine doses per year.

EGYPT—Egypt’s Ministry of Health is building “Vaccine City,” an ambitious initiative designed to establish the nation as a continental leader in vaccine manufacturing.

This sprawling 115,000-square-meter complex will enable Egypt to produce millions of vaccine doses annually while supplying markets across Africa and beyond.

From dependence to self-sufficiency

The government has set a bold target: by 2030, Egypt will manufacture 140 million doses of human vaccines per year.

This marks a decisive shift toward pharmaceutical independence and self-reliance in public health.

Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar emphasized that the project strengthens national health security while advancing the broader strategy to localize biotechnology industries within the country.

Construction has progressed steadily, with the first phase complete and infrastructure work reaching 90 percent completion.

The facility encompasses 32 buildings and specialized units dedicated to vaccine production and research.

Once operational, three factories will produce human vaccines while three additional units will manufacture veterinary vaccines.

The state-of-the-art laboratories for research and development will operate alongside a modern logistics hub designed for efficient storage and distribution across regions.

Scaling up to feed a continent

Egypt’s vision extends significantly beyond its 2030 targets. By 2040, the nation expects to produce 690 million human vaccine doses and 11 billion veterinary doses annually.

This production volume positions Egypt to supply approximately 16 percent of Africa’s vaccine demand, making it an indispensable partner in continental health security.

Beyond Africa, Egypt plans to export vaccines to more than 60 countries worldwide, establishing itself as a trusted pharmaceutical supplier on the international stage.

This expansion generates economic opportunities while elevating Egypt’s role in global health markets.

Creating a knowledge center

Recognizing that production requires skilled professionals, Egypt is developing the Vaccine Biotechnology Complex Academy.

This institution will function as a regional training hub for specialists in vaccine manufacturing and biotechnology.

By connecting research breakthroughs to real-world industrial applications, the academy will cultivate a pipeline of qualified experts who support the entire sector.

Building international bridges

The Ministry of Health highlighted the importance of deepening cooperation with African nations and strengthening international biotechnology partnerships.

These collaborations will help Egypt become not just a manufacturer but also a knowledge-sharing hub for the continent.

Vaccine City represents a transformative investment that creates an independent manufacturing foundation for Egypt while enhancing public health systems across Africa.

The project reflects Egypt’s determination to achieve self-sufficiency and become a dependable healthcare provider that addresses regional health needs.
