Murang’a County deploys Starlink satellite internet in 170 health facilities to enhance rural healthcare

The ambitious project targets approximately 1.2 million residents, most of whom inhabit rural communities where traditional connectivity has remained inconsistent.

KENYA—Murang’a County has rolled out satellite internet connectivity across 170 public health facilities in what officials describe as Kenya’s largest public digital healthcare initiative.

The ambitious project targets approximately 1.2 million residents, most of whom live in rural communities where traditional connectivity has been inconsistent.

The initiative is now regarded as one of Africa’s largest connected telemedicine programmes.

From pilot to full rollout

The county’s successful transition builds on solid foundations.

A pilot programme involving just 35 health facilities was deemed successful by the end of 2025, paving the way for the comprehensive expansion.

Paratus Kenya, an authorized Starlink agent, managed both the pilot phase and the subsequent installation across all 170 facilities, ensuring consistent technical deployment and support.

The official launch took place on May 28, 2026, at the Telemedicine Hub in Muriranjas Hospital, Kahuro, where healthcare stakeholders and national media experienced live demonstrations of the system.

Notably, leading healthcare officials from other African countries, including Nigeria and Ethiopia, attended the event to witness digital telemedicine applications they themselves require.

Transforming rural healthcare delivery

The shift from traditional WiFi systems to satellite-based connectivity fundamentally changes how doctors and nurses operate in remote settings.

Physicians can now consult specialists instantly and access patient records across facilities, dramatically reducing referral delays.

Health workers transmit laboratory results faster, enabling quicker diagnoses and treatment decisions that were previously hampered by poor connectivity.

The satellite system proves particularly resilient against the infrastructure vulnerabilities that plague terrestrial connections.

Fibre cuts, power outages, and network failures that historically disrupted healthcare delivery no longer pose the same obstacles.

This reliability is critical for facilities that depend on real-time data transmission and remote consultations to serve their communities effectively.

Economic benefits and cost savings

The county estimates the new system cuts internet costs by up to 70 percent compared to previous WiFi arrangements, allowing administrators to redirect substantial resources toward patient care, medicines, and essential medical equipment.

This financial advantage operates in tandem with the county’s ongoing medical facilities solarization programme, creating a comprehensive infrastructure enhancement that pairs stable power with dependable internet connectivity.

Broader community access

The initiative extends beyond hospitals and clinics.

Paratus Essential Access provides reliable and fast connectivity to institutions, including schools, NGOs, police stations, fire stations, and digital hubs.

Public institutions such as schools and churches situated within a 14-kilometer radius of upgraded health facilities receive the opportunity to access the network at costs agreed upon between the county and Paratus.

Vision for broader adoption

Joseph Kibwott, Managing Director of Paratus Kenya, stated that Paratus Essential Access is designed to support the institutions that communities depend on every day.

This project demonstrates how connectivity can help transform healthcare access and improve service delivery in underserved areas.”

The county sees the rollout as a potential model for other regions pursuing digital health infrastructure expansion beyond urban centres.
