GenomaLab to invest US$10M in Oman healthcare operations

The expansion comes as Oman seeks greater private sector participation in healthcare and increased investment in scientific and medical capabilities under Oman Vision 2040.

OMAN—GenomaLab Medical Group will invest nearly $10 million in its first year of operations in Oman to expand access to healthcare technologies and biotechnology services.

The healthcare and medical technology company has started operations and is recruiting staff as it develops a business platform across SOHAR Port and Freezone and mainland Oman.

Its initial portfolio will include continuous glucose monitoring, home healthcare products, stem cell banking, cell and gene therapy and next-generation sequencing (NGS) services.

Dr A Shavki, Chief Executive Officer of GenomaLab Medical LLC, told the Observer that the company expects first-year investment to reach almost US$10 million.

It plans to employ 30 to 50 people during the initial phase, including at least 10 Omanis in line with local employment requirements.

Building an Omani healthcare platform

GenomaLab is using its presence at SOHAR Port and Freezone as a base for serving the Omani market, while also positioning the business to support potential regional and international activity.

Its mainland operations are intended to provide closer links to hospitals, clinics, laboratories, research institutions and patients.

The expansion comes as Oman seeks greater private sector participation in healthcare and increased investment in scientific and medical capabilities under Oman Vision 2040.

For GenomaLab, the market provides an opportunity to introduce specialised diagnostic and biotechnology services while developing partnerships with local healthcare providers and institutions.

The company will initially focus on diabetes technologies, including continuous glucose monitoring systems, as well as home care products, cell and gene therapies, stem cell banking and NGS testing.

NGS enables laboratories to analyse large quantities of genetic material simultaneously.

The technology can support the diagnosis and monitoring of inherited disorders, cancers and other diseases.

However, GenomaLab’s rollout of these services will depend on obtaining the required licences and regulatory approvals in Oman.

Partnerships and diabetes services

GenomaLab has signed agreements with two clinics to provide services for diabetes patients, although it has not disclosed the facilities’ names or the financial value of the agreements.

The company is also in discussions with public and private sector organisations on stem cell biobanking, technology transfer, cell and gene therapy, and NGS testing services.

These partnerships could support the adoption of specialised technologies while connecting local healthcare providers with external technical expertise.

In November, GenomaLab plans to conduct a nationwide campaign offering free screening tests to people with diabetes.

The company is expected to release details on participating clinics, locations and eligibility requirements closer to the campaign.

Diabetes is a significant public health issue across the Gulf, creating demand for technologies that support earlier detection, continuous monitoring and care outside traditional hospital settings.

Continuous glucose monitoring, for example, can provide patients and healthcare professionals with more frequent information on blood glucose levels.

Technology and infrastructure

GenomaLab said its Oman operation will combine local market access with regional logistics and international scientific expertise.

Its broader activities include laboratory and healthcare infrastructure, diagnostic equipment, biotechnology services, cleanroom facilities and technical support.

Through its turnkey model, the group supports projects from laboratory planning and design through equipment installation, commissioning and validation.

It also provides technologies and consumables required for ongoing operations.

The planned investment will fund GenomaLab’s workforce expansion, partnership development, and service introduction in the Omani market.

The company has not disclosed how much of the first-year investment will be allocated to laboratory or production facilities, nor has it provided a detailed timetable for rolling out individual services.
