Siemens Healthineers invests US$81.9M to expand its Kemnath medical technology manufacturing site

GERMANY—Siemens Healthineers is strengthening its manufacturing footprint in Germany by investing €70 million (US$81.9 million) to expand its production facility in Kemnath, Upper Palatinate.

The project will involve the construction of a new production and assembly hall designed to support the manufacture of advanced medical technologies and to increase automation and production capacity at one of the company’s key manufacturing sites.

The new facility, which will cover approximately 4,500 square metres, is expected to become operational by mid-2027.

Construction officially began on 15 July during a groundbreaking ceremony attended by several government and company leaders.

Among those present were Bavarian Minister of Health Judith Gerlach, Tirschenreuth District Administrator Hubert Schicker, Kemnath Mayor Roman Schäffler, and Siemens Healthineers Managing Board member Elisabeth Staudinger.

Expansion to support future growth

The latest investment represents the next phase in the long-term development of the Kemnath site, which plays a significant role in the company’s manufacturing operations.

Siemens Healthineers aims to use the expansion to accommodate growing demand for medical technology while advancing the automation of large-scale mechanical component production.

According to Johannes Waldhör, Head of the Kemnath site and Commercial Head of the Mechatronic Products Technology Center (TEC Center), the investment reflects the company’s continued commitment to Germany as a manufacturing base.

He noted that the expansion will improve productivity, strengthen the site’s competitiveness, and help secure employment opportunities across the region as production capabilities continue to grow.

New smart manufacturing facility

At the centre of the project is a modern production hall that will feature approximately 3,400 square metres dedicated to manufacturing components used in radiotherapy systems.

An additional 300 square metres will serve logistics operations, enabling efficient handling of materials and finished products.

Alongside the new building, Siemens Healthineers will renovate about 700 square metres within the existing facility.

Positioning the two buildings side by side will shorten logistics routes, improve workflow efficiency, and encourage closer collaboration between production, logistics, and engineering teams.

A key feature of the expansion is the establishment of a Smart Mechanic Center, a highly automated manufacturing area dedicated to producing large mechanical components.

The company expects the new facility to improve manufacturing precision, increase efficiency, and support the production of increasingly sophisticated medical technologies.

Sustainability integrated into the project

Siemens Healthineers has incorporated several sustainability measures into the development to reduce the environmental impact of the new facility.

The building has been designed to operate on a carbon dioxide (CO₂)-neutral basis through the use of an all-electric energy system and energy-efficient LED lighting.

The project will also connect to the site’s existing heat supply while incorporating planned photovoltaic installations to generate renewable electricity.

In addition, the facility will feature a retention roof capable of collecting and storing rainwater, supporting responsible water management alongside resource-efficient construction methods and compliance with modern environmental standards.
