SSMC launches PillSense capsules in Abu Dhabi to improve internal bleeding detection

UAE—Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC), a subsidiary of PureHealth, has introduced a swallowable diagnostic capsule designed to help doctors detect upper gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding within minutes.

The technology, known as PillSense, is now being made available to patients across Abu Dhabi as part of ongoing efforts to improve emergency care and accelerate clinical decision-making.

The capsule uses advanced light-absorption technology to detect blood in the upper gastrointestinal tract and wirelessly transmits the findings to an external receiver, where they are monitored by healthcare professionals.

Once swallowed, the device delivers results in less than 10 minutes, enabling doctors to quickly determine whether a patient requires urgent treatment or further investigation.

The innovation is expected to reduce diagnostic delays and improve the management of patients arriving at emergency departments with symptoms of internal bleeding.

Reducing reliance on invasive procedures

Traditionally, patients with suspected upper GI bleeding often undergo endoscopy to determine the source and severity of bleeding.

However, many of these patients do not ultimately require immediate intervention.

According to data gathered during a pilot programme at SSMC, PillSense helped clinicians determine that invasive procedures were not immediately necessary in 86% of assessed cases.

This allowed healthcare teams to prioritise patients who required urgent care while avoiding unnecessary procedures for others.

For patients, the technology offers a less invasive and more comfortable diagnostic experience.

Instead of waiting hours for confirmation, individuals can receive answers about their condition within minutes, helping to reduce anxiety and shorten emergency department stays.

At the same time, clinicians gain access to real-time diagnostic information, enabling them to make faster, more confident treatment decisions in high-pressure emergency settings.

The technology also supports more efficient triaging, helping hospitals allocate resources where they are needed most.

Dr. Marwan Al Kaabi, Chief Executive Officer of SSMC, said rapid access to accurate information is critical in emergency medicine.

He noted that PillSense provides clinicians with reliable insights that help ensure patients receive appropriate care without unnecessary delays.

The rollout is supported by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, which continues to promote the adoption of advanced medical technologies as part of its vision for a fully integrated, data-driven healthcare system.

Dr. Asma Ibrahim Al Mannaei, Executive Director of the Health Life Sciences Sector at the Department, said the initiative demonstrates Abu Dhabi’s commitment to implementing innovations that deliver measurable benefits for both patients and healthcare providers.

Part of a broader innovation drive

The launch comes as SSMC and its parent company, PureHealth, continue to expand their focus on innovation, research, and advanced clinical care.

In recent months, PureHealth secured internationally recognised AAHRPP accreditation for SSMC and SEHA, strengthening its position in clinical research and human subject protection.

The group’s Abu Dhabi Health Research Centre currently oversees more than 200 active studies across hospitals, clinics, and laboratories.

SSMC has also recently reported advances in specialised cardiac procedures, robotic surgery, and paediatric neurotology, reflecting the hospital’s growing role as a centre for complex care and medical innovation in the region.
